It's been nearly a month since I've been sculpting regularly. Back in October, I launched 2Picas with my friend Adriana, and business really started to pick up in February. This month, I'm determined to be at the studio at least five days a week, including some long hauls during the weekend. The latest sculpture is developing very nicely, and should be done before I go to Tokyo at the end of the month. Whether that happens depends on how many times I return to the studio to realize that I can add even more definition to the grooves in the sculpture.
Things have been working well with my new studiomate. I really enjoy being in a space with another stone sculptor (not that I can share space with any other artist, because of the dust I generate). It's great being able to share knowledge and tools, and I think it works so well because we're both open to sharing. I know some artists who are very competitive, and would never dream of being so close to someone else who works in the same or a similar medium or style. It's a different mindset, I suppose.
I'm looking forward to my week in Japan. The moral support has been tremendous, and although Theo Jansen's exhibition won't be what I expected, many other things have come up to keep me more than occupied while I'm there. More details on that will follow.
