Yesterday, I went to Globe Studios to select my studio. They will be turning one of the large units (900+ sq ft) into two smaller units, and I submitted my application in time to get first pick between the two units. Mine will be a roomy 520 sq ft, which is considerably larger than the tiny space I have now (which is barely 90 sq ft). I'm thrilled by the space and the fact that I'll have double-doors and a window! It really doesn't take much to make a studio more desirable. And, unlike the unit I had on Duke St several years ago, this will be well-heated and well-maintained.
I'll have the full 900+ sq ft for a few months, until they have collected enough rent from me to afford the renovations to split the unit into two. I plan, at that time, to also create a partition in my unit so that I have a small office and gallery area separate from the dusty studio area. To be honest, I don't know how I can make use of the full unit. The temptation is to build some plinths for my sculptures, but I'm not sure whether I'll have space to store them once I "lose" have the space.
I'm very excited to join an artist's co-op. Although I'll miss the convenience of a studio in my own home, I'm feeling the need to expand not merely the physical space but back into the artist community. It'll be nice to have peers around, and to be part of the events hosted by the co-op (such as the upcoming open house).
I have created a new section in the website for all of my upcoming events, and have also removed the Twitter block I had been testing. I'm still using Twitter, and enjoy it quite a bit, but it doesn't make sense to be on this website. The link has been moved to my networking page , and you can see my Twitter profile here.
